The Heat From My Lamps Threw My Thermostat Off

My mom went through a huge decluttering phase.

She got rid of 80% of her belongings and the best part about it was that I got to go through the items she didn’t want anymore and take what I wanted.

One of the best things I got from her was a matching set of lamps. I’d never seen these lamps before and when I asked her where she got them, she said the neighbor gave them to her a few weeks prior and she didn’t have anywhere to put them. I thought they were great, so I happily took them and set them up in my hallway. I kept the lamps on during the evening so it was easy to see at night. A few nights after I brought them home, I noticed how cold I was getting at night. I would wake up shivering and it would feel like my furnace wasn’t even running. I called the HVAC company and asked them to come service my furnace. When the HVAC technician arrived, he asked me about my new lamps and I thought he was being polite. When I said they were kept on during the evenings, he told me that they were causing my thermostat to respond differently. The heat from the lamps were leading the thermostat to believe it was warmer than it actually was, causing my furnace to not run at all. I’m glad there were no serious issues with the furnace, but I had to move my new lamps to a different spot in the house.
