The fireplace made the air dry.

I know that not everyone has a fireplace in their home, but where I live, it is a necessity. I would hate to have the power go out and not have a backup source of heating. I don’t mind it when we need to use the fireplace. The heat can be a bit intense, but it still heats most of the house. I just don’t like the way it dries out the air. I have a pot of water on the hearth the entire time the fireplace is on. The water evaporates and it helps to put some moisture in the air. When the fireplace isn’t working, I have a humidifier that runs continuously with the furnace. Even though we get a lot of ice and snow since we are near a lake, it doesn’t put any humidity in the air. The house is always dry. The kids think it is funny to walk across the floor and watch the sparks fly when they touch their father or I. We don’t find it funny. I don’t think it’s funny when my hair is flying all over the place or when my clothing sticks to my skin. We had the humidifier installed in the furnace shortly after we had the new HVAC system installed. I think of it as a necessary piece of equipment. I can’t imagine going through a cold winter day without a heating system and I can’t imagine having heating system without having a humidifier. It just goes hand in hand. I just wish I could find a portable humidifier that didn’t need to use electricity.
