Now that my children are older, I’ve been attempting to teach them more in depth household responsibilities.

They’re still required to do basic chores like load the dishwasher, take out the trash, and mop the floors.

However, I’m also starting to teach them the fundamentals of HVAC maintenance and lawn care too. When I was their age, I wasn’t prepared to handle these household responsibilities and it took me a long time to understand them. I didn’t want the same for my kids. To improve their HVAC maintenance, I’ve asked my kids to start replacing the air filters, clear out the weeds around the condenser unit, and sometimes I have them schedule the HVAC tune ups. In doing this, I’m hopeful that they’ll have a better understanding of what keeps the heat and air in our home running. I’ve also attempted to teach them about our thermostat and how the temperature of our home affects our monthly energy consumption. My kids have always been particular about the temperature of our home, so one month, I let them control the temperature all day and night but there was a catch. They had to pay that month’s utility bill. They were shocked to see the price of that bill, but I wasn’t. I showed them previous energy bills and how much lower they were due to my particular thermostat settings. This was one of my best lessons, because they quickly learned about energy usage. I never heard them complain about the temperature of our home again and I’m sure they’ll carry this HVAC knowledge into their own homes one day.
