I never said I wanted to work for my dad.
I never said I wanted to work for my dad.
When I went to HVAC school, it was because I wanted to be an HVAC technician.
I didn’t tell my dad I was planning to work for him after graduation, nor did I even think of who or where I wanted to work.
I admired my dad while growing up. He is a selfless person who often got up in the middle of the night and went to help families with their broken HVAC systems. If it was the furnace that was broken, he didn’t care what time of day or night it was. Most people thought that because he was the owner of the HVAC company, he would send an HVAC technician to their house, but not dad. His HVAC techs worked hard when they were on the clock. He demanded hard work and putting the customer first. When it was an emergency, dad would handle the job on his own. I thought he was a good man, but I wanted to work for someone else when doing my apprenticeship. I wanted to know if all HVAC company owners were like dad, or if he was an anomaly. I was hoping he was just one of many and not a unicorn. Once my apprenticeship is over, I may decide to work for dad, but until that time, I don’t know which HVAC company I want to work for. When I decide, dad will be the first one to know, but I don’t appreciate everyone assuming I will work for him, when I don’t yet know. I’ll eventually need to decide where I want to work, but I still have time.
