Frozen evaporator coils
Frozen evaporator coils
We keep getting strange and extreme weather patterns this winter.
- I live in a climate that is predominantly subtropical, although winters can be quite interesting because the temperature will fluctuate wildly throughout the day and evenings.
Recently, this caused an issue with my heating and air conditioning system. We had a night that saw temperatures drop into the low 40s. I was running the heat that night. However, I noticed that temperatures would soar into the low 80s by the time the afternoon arrived! Before I left for work, I set the air conditioner to run once a certain temperature was reached. By the time I got home, it was very warm in the house, and I discovered that the air conditioner never seemed to turn on at all! Before long, I realized that the system was frozen up! I really didn’t want to call out an HVAC technician so I did some quick research online. I discovered that in order to thaw out the frozen coils, I needed to turn off the air conditioner and run the fan on auto to melt all the ice away. I was really hoping this would turn out to be the solution I needed, because if it didn’t work, then that meant that there was some other problem going on besides very low temperatures the previous night. Thankfully, the ice did melt off the coils and the air conditioner was able to function again! I was so glad that there weren’t any serious issues with my air conditioner.
