Where we live, we normally don’t need heating in the winter. It gets chilly at night, but with a couple of blankets, and a space heater early in the morning, I have always been comfortable living in the south. This winter, we had a few very cold nights and days. I had a heating system in our house, but I never used it until this year. I had to admit we were lucky to have a heating system in the house. Some of my friends had frost on their windows, and they didn’t have a heating system. One of my neighbors had a heat pump in their house, but only because they found out it was cheaper to use than a traditional central air conditioning unit, and they were right. According to her, she saved almost $2000 just in the first summer. I couldn’t believe what she said. I wanted to save that kind of money, but I was worried she was wrong. I talked to the HVAC company and asked about the efficiency of a mini split for air conditioning. I sat down and figured how many watts it used and converted that to kilowatt hours, then multiplied the price I was paying per kilowatt hour for my energy bill. Not only was it cheaper to use, but it wasn’t as expensive as a new central air conditioning unit. Thanks to my mini split HVAC unit, I have saved money on my energy bills, and I had heat through the two extremely cold weeks we had ever experienced.
