I had to get out and get my own home

I used to laugh at these men who were living their parents and in their thirties.

I moved out of my mom’s house when I was only eighteen and I said I would never go back.

I couldn’t stand the way my mom lorded over the thermostat. No one was allowed to change the thermostat but her and she wouldn’t allow the thermostat to go above sixty-five. I remember going to bed and being so cold that you I would crawl into bed with my little brother, just so I could feel some body heat. He would be shivering and I would tell him to put his back up against mine and I would keep him warm, but it worked both ways. Little did I know that ten years after moving out from under her thumb, I would be moving back in. I had lost my job and I had to be able to live somewhere until I could get enough money to get back on my feet. It took me nearly two years of saving money before I was ready to move. That was two years of lack of heating and no air conditioning and listening to my mother lecture me. I finally found a home and I was thrilled to be able to own a home of my own. Unfortunately, I realized I was a lot like my mom after I moved into my home. I suddenly realized how expensive it was to have good heating and air conditioning. I didn’t push it so far as to have the thermostat low enough to freeze and to not have any air conditioning, but I kept a close eye on the thermostat and I became very conservative since I was paying the bills.
