I’ll be honest, I like to come home and relax in the air conditioning after work.

And days off are meant for the family and my passions outside of work. So I do my best to fit in all the other homeowner responsibilities as I can. But this spring, I decided that I wanted to get a bit proactive when it comes to saving money on the HVAC cooling costs. Where we live, the air conditioning during the summer is easily the steepest HVAC bill we get all years. And there have been instances where I saw the utility bill midsummer and almost cried. That got me to be a bit more aware of the thermostat setting. I even figured out how to program the digital thermostat in order to deal with the peak heating hours of the afternoon when I’m at the office. But that’s about as far as I went. So when I got my alert to call the HVAC company in order to get the air conditioning tune-up done this spring, I decided to go a step further. Really though, it was quite easy as the steps were all laid out for me on the HVAC company’s website. I simply followed the suggested steps. Basically, I just sealed up the house tight and made sure that we got some solar shades to mitigate the direct sunlight heating. We are about to get into it with the heat now so I’m particularly interested to see what my prep and thermostat control can do for our utility bill this summer.
