When the email came across my screen, I felt a pit in my stomach.

This was because there was definitely a serious health crisis occurring and we were heading home.

The company decided to close the office with the zone controlled HVAC in the early stages of the pandemic. And the idea of working from home in my air conditioning was far from palatable. I loved our office and I particularly loved that zone controlled HVAC I mentioned. But with the office closed for what looked to be a long time, I had to come to terms with working from home. And it would be one thing if I lived alone but I have a family. Not only was my office closed but so was my wife’s. So we both had to work in the air conditioning safety our house. Then add in the kids trying to learn remotely from home and it was a handful no doubt. Initially, it just didn’t go all that well for me. Really, that didn’t have anything to do with my family or any of that. I just was having a really tough time focusing on my work. The online meetings were difficult and I missed being able to confer with colleagues when I had a question. But once my wife and I cleared out the guest room to create a home office, things got much better. For one, the HVAC cooling is much better in that room. And sharing an office with my wife actually helped me stay in my chair and get my work done. The focus just came that much more naturally with good air conditioning and sharing that office space with my wife.
