Smoke alarms and your heating system

Smoke alarms and your heating system

Smoke alarms are needed in all homes.

  • It is required by law in most places, and although smoke alarms sometimes save lives, they can also be quite a pain.

In my case, I have a very powerful central heating and air conditioning system, and because my central heating and air conditioning system is so powerful, it sometimes sets off the smoke alarm. How this happens, is when the thermostat comes on, the central heating and air conditioning system literally blasts the air right on to the smoke alarm, and the smoke alarm them mistakes the central heating and air conditioning system for smoke! It took me a little bit to actually figure this out. It was when my wife finally noticed the different times the smoke alarm kept going off, that it was right when the central heating and air conditioning system clicked on. We tried setting the thermostat a little lower for the heating, since the heating is really what causes the problem. And, that did not even work. We called our local heating and cooling company about it too, to see if they had any useful advise about it. They could only suggest that we close the air vent that is right by the smoke alarm that it was setting off. The other option was to move the smoke alarm. But, the way that the smoke alarm is mounted into the ceiling, it would take a professional to do it. I thought about asking the HVAC company, but they only deal in heating and air conditioning, not in smoke alarms!
