I’m so thankful for the kindness of strangers.

• Without good people on this earth, where would all of us be? I know that I would be paying high heating bills again this winter.

This is something I know for a fact because I had no idea how to prepare for a northern winter. I’m from the west where winter is just not an immense deal unless you live in the mountains. Where I came from we had a heat pump as well. It came on now and again while we were in the winter. So when I took a job on the other side of the country and went up north, I had no idea what I was entirely getting into. But man, did I ever get a quick rude awakening. We moved in the fall and I was instantly startled by how cool it was already. This was not a fantastic sign of things to come. Fortunately, the previous owner believed in entirely fantastic residential heating and A/C. The house had a gas heating system that was just more than one years old. The realtor suggested I get the heating and A/C dealer to do the heating service which I promptly had done. But that’s all I knew to do. I had no idea how to prepare the house. So there were some spaces that were allowing freezing air in and the heating to escape. That first winter saw the gas heating system running near non stop and yet there was such a draft that all of us were entirely freezing that whole winter. Thankfully, a fantastic buddy straightened me out and all of us chased down that heating goblin together. It’s going to be a much warmer Winter this year.
