After the kids went to college, only my youngest son returned home.

He took five years to graduate and he wasn’t ready to start his adult life.

My wife and I let him live with us for three more years and then he met a very sweet, kind, and honest girl. She expected more from her boyfriend and he had to start making some changes if he wanted to keep her. He started teaching at the high school and found an apartment close to work. I was so proud of my boy. He was the last one to leave the nest and my baby. When he left the house, my wife and I decided to make some changes to the house. We had a three level home and there was no need to continue heating and cooling the entire house, when we were only living on the main floor. A contractor made a ton of suggestions, but our favorite idea was a zone control HVAC unit. With separate air handlers for different parts of the house, we are able to only heat and cool the areas we use. We turned off the air handlers for the places upstairs and the rec room downstairs. After six months, we have managed to save enough money to pay for half of the cost of the new HVAC unit. The next changes we want to make include the back yard. Now that the kids are gone, it might be nice to turn the backyard into an outdoor oasis with a hot tub and a pergola or a gazebo.
