Trouble cancelling gym membership.
Trouble cancelling gym membership.
After being in the same location for the last five years, my husband told me that he was being transferred across the country.
- We had both known this move was coming but I still hoped to put it off for a little longer.
I was in a hurry to pack everything up and prepare for the move. I called the movers, took care of our lease and made all of the necessary arrangements for the transfer of schools for the kids. The last thing I had to handle was cancelling my gym membership. I remembered that it was a great deal of paperwork to sign up at the local gym. Getting out of the membership proved to be even more of a nightmare. The gym had my credit card on file and would automatically charge my membership fees. Now that I wanted to end that membership, they refused to allow me to cancel. They expected me to forfeit nearly a full year’s worth of fees. I explained that my husband had been transferred and I couldn’t possibly remain with the gym. That’s when they pointed out that I had signed a contract. I had no idea that the terms of the contract applied when I would no longer be living in the area. I asked about transferring my gym membership to the area where I would be living. Finally, this was something they were willing to do. I then asked where the closest gym to my new home was located. She explained that they didn’t actually have a gym in that area yet. A new gym was in the works and expected to open within the next two years. I was so frustrated I wanted to scream. I then threatened to write a bad review online. This motivated them to refund my gym membership fees.
