ductwork sealing or get a ductless mini-split system?

Did you know that, on average, 30% of your HVAC energy costs are lost through the ductwork system? I didn’t know that until recently.

  • We were getting our HVAC system maintained and the HVAC company told us that we really needed to get our ductwork sealed.

they explained that there were gaps in our ductwork and that we were losing a lot of our heated and cooled air that way. We went ahead and had them do a ductwork sealing. I’m going to wait and see if our energy bills go down any in the next few months. However, while researching the issue can’t, I came across these things called ductless mini split systems. Essentially, it’s a heating and cooling system that does not use ducts. Instead, it works kind of like a window air conditioning unit. The outdoor component looks similar to the one that central air conditioning uses. But it uses pipes that go directly into an indoor dispenser. you can have several different indoor dispensers, throughout the house, but no duct work is involved. It’s a little bit complex but I’m seriously thinking about getting one for our house. That’s because the HVAC company also mentioned that our HVAC system is getting a bit old and we might want to start thinking about getting a new one. I’m thinking about going a different direction entirely. I’m going to call up our HVAC company and see if they install ductless mini-split systems and get a price estimate for a house. I just wish I’d done this before I paid for them to steal our duct work.
