Moisture affects wood furniture
My new hobby is making wood furniture.
I have even begun selling it and it may turn into a part time job.
I made my outdoor shed into a woodworking station. I have all my tools, wood and nearly finished pieces in there. I just love the process of cutting, measuring and designing a piece. I recently did some hunting around online and found an article about humidity affecting wood. Too much humidity in the air quality causes wood to swell. Not enough moisture in the air will cause wood to crack. My shed is outside with no HVAC or humidity control at all. I am now concerned that my wood pieces may get damaged in the upcoming hot then cold season. Adding a HVAC unit will be quite expensive. I could get a ductless mini split, but then I have to pay for HVAC installation and maintenance. I also will need to have an indoor air handler in an already small shed. I am wondering if I can get by simply with a dehumidifier and a humidifier. The shed is really tiny, so controlling the moisture in the air quality can’t be that hard. There are dehumidifiers and humidifiers that are portable and can just sit in a space. I can use the dehumidifier in the summer to get rid of the sticky air. The humidifier can work in the winter when the air feels so dry and static filled. I don’t want to cut too many corners though. If I lose out on all my wood, that will be quite expensive.
