Commercial HVAC was not for me.
Commercial HVAC was not for me.
Being an HVAC technician has given my life some purpose.
I have been able to see the relief on people’s faces when I come to the door.
They know that there will soon be heat to warm up their children, and themselves. I love when I am able to restore air conditioning to people who have breathing problems. You can see the fear in their eyes when you first show up, and it goes away when the air conditioning comes back on. These last ten years have been so much better than my first ten years as an HVAC technician. When I first graduated from technical school with my HVAC certification, I had a gentleman approach me about working for his corporation. I was first in my class and he said I needed to spread my wings and look at the big picture. He promised me a lot of money if I would work for his commercial HVAC company. I was working by myself and seldom had any contact with anyone but one other HVAC technician. I felt like I was wasting my time. The money was excellent and I had a lot of responsibility, but I wasn’t doing what I wanted to do. I wanted to help people and give them much needed heating and air conditioning. When I quit the job, my uncle was really upset. He said he had talked the company into hiring me. I gave them ten years of my life, and I didn’t think I owed the company or my uncle anything more. I was finally going to be working for a real HVAC company.
