Without the fan running, the silence is deafening

There have been many times that I have struggled due to my nighttime ventilation preferences.

I’m one of those people who requires background noise. I can’t be in a silent place and concentrate at my fullest capacity. I genuinely need to have some kind of low level background sounds or conversations happening for my brain to tune in and focus on exactly the task at hand. Oftentimes, this makes things quite difficult in my life. On days when I arrive at the office and nobody else is there working, I have to stream podcasts through my earbuds at a very quiet volume to make up for the stagnant work environment. If I’m at home and the house is empty, I have to turn on the TV to something mindless so that the room doesn’t feel so empty. Worst of all, in the middle of the night I will lie wide awake if I don’t have a fan or other ventilation device running to serenade my sleep. It’s the absolute worst situation to be in when you don’t have full control over your air temperature control devices. There have been many times that I have struggled due to my nighttime ventilation preferences. If I am at home, I simply run a fan in my room and enjoy the low hum created by the fresh air flow. When I have full control over my heating and cooling system, I like to keep the air conditioning system running all night long for extra cooling power and comforting sound. However, when the electricity goes out and neither form of ventilation is available, my sleep doesn’t stand a chance. Every summer when we lose power in windy storms, I spend the nights suffering from heat and deafening silence.
