Why you shouldn't wrap your air conditioner during the winter
Each spring our company is very busy.
We handle at least 10 appointments a day and each one takes over an hour.
We are a smaller HVAC dealership so we only have four technicians on staff and they are constantly out on maintenance or trouble calls. One call that we get each spring confuses me because we keep reminding our customers that they are harming their HVAC unit by wrapping it in plastic. For some reason many homeowners have decided that they need to completely wrap their exterior air conditioning unit during the winter to keep the snow out. Would you recommend making a cover of sorts but it should be made out of wood or something that can breathe because the heat pump within the exterior unit operates all year long. By wrapping the exterior unit you cause moisture to build up within it and it causes damage that must be repaired costing homeowners money in the long run. To avoid heavy snow buildup on top of the exterior unit you can simply make a wooden box that leaves plenty of room around it to breathe but doesn’t allow the snow to sit directly on top of it. I have even seen covers that are solid on the top but that use lattice sides so that air can circulate freely around the unit. This type of design keeps debris such as leaves and sticks that may fall from trees off of being unit as well. Each time that we arrive at a house and see a plastic tarp tied tightly around the exterior air conditioning unit we just cringe because we know when we take it off it’s going to be a mess.
