Strange odor coming from my exterior HVAC unit

Strange odor coming from my exterior HVAC unit

We’ve always been pretty good about general maintenance on our HVAC system so when we started having an issue we were a bit surprised. We only have it serviced every other year because we don’t use it as much as many people do but I do perform preventive maintenance twice a year. We use a high-performance filter on the system so that it can attract small dust particles and bacteria to keep the air in our home safe. I always make sure that the interior unit as well as exterior unit have ample space around them so that debris doesn’t cause an issue as well. I give a visual check of things like the coolant lines and wiring to make sure nothing has damaged them but the one thing I didn’t know that I needed to do was flush the drain lines on the air conditioner. We started to smell a strange odor when we were outside, it smelled like a stagnant pond and realized it was coming from the drain line of the air conditioning unit. I went online to see how I could fix this and many of the sites said that you can flush a simple bleach water mixture down the drain and it will kill any algae that has developed in the line. I followed the simple steps that were recommended and within a couple of days the odor disappeared and the websites also said that this would help prevent damage to the air conditioning unit from bacteria buildup. If you aren’t sure how to do this I highly recommend contacting an HVAC professional to have them come take care of this for you. I’m pretty handy so it isn’t that hard but if you aren’t proficient at home maintenance you are better to trust a professional.
