Working long hours on holidays is the worst part of my job
I’m thinking about complaining to my boss about it this year, but he doesn’t take kindly to any of his HVAC technicians complaining about doing their jobs.
I think that most of the time, I have it pretty easy at my job. I’ve been an HVAC technician for about ten years, and I really enjoy my job most of the time. I like working on heating and air conditioning systems and most of my customers are great people. I enjoy getting to know my customers and their families when I go to do their HVAC maintenance and HVAC repair work throughout the year. But then during the holidays, it seems like I’m the HVAC technician who always manages to get stuck working extra hours on weekends and holidays. My wife hates this part about my job, and she complains that people seem to always have big heating and cooling emergencies right when she’s ready to sit down for a holiday dinner that she has worked on for hours. I know that she’s exaggerating, but it does seem like I’m the only HVAC technician at work who has to work through Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve. I’m thinking about complaining to my boss about it this year, but he doesn’t take kindly to any of his HVAC technicians complaining about doing their jobs. He has owned this local heating and cooling company for about thirty years, and he’s pretty good at his job. HVAC work is his life, and I don’t think I would have a job for very long if I complained about doing emergency HVAC calls on holiday weekends. He says that’s when everyone is having their holiday parties, and we have to always be available for our customers. And by we, I guess he means me!
