I have been working as a HVAC technician for 6 months and only recently started going on calls on my own. Before that, I was under apprenticeship and would go with other more experienced HVAC technicians. We do learn a lot in school as we work towards attaining our HVAC certification. However, real-world-experience is also crucial. So, HVAC companies set up apprenticeship programs for newbies. Once you apply and are accepted, you train under an expert for a period of time. They teach you how to interact with customers to handle heating and cooling units. After the apprenticeship is over, you can now start going on different jobs. As I mentioned, it has been 6 months since I got my van and have been doing repairs and maintenance. Most customers who call the HVAC business are easy going and won’t mind a young person fixing their units. All they want is to have proper heating or cooling in their homes. However, there are those who are quite specific, and only want certain HVAC technicians. I met Jill when I went to her house to check on her heat pump. She had called saying it wasn’t working well and she wanted Vincent to work on it. Vincent is an experienced HVAC technician of 15 years, but he was on vacation. So, I was sent to the house to fix the heat pump. Jill refused to let me in, and I had to contact Vincent to convince her. It took some time but she finally let me into the house. Thankfully, Vincent had been my mentor and I had his personal cell phone number.
