Monthly maintenance can make a difference down the road. It means the difference between the system lasting 6 years or 8 years. It is absolutely necessary to take care of the system and that requires extra care and a little bit of work. I found a list of routine maintenance and I use all of these items as a way to regularly check on the health of the machine. I clean the evaporator coils with a special comb that I bought from a store. The evaporator coils can get dirty and dusty so cleaning them can help the system work more efficiently. I also thoroughly clean the drain line. The drain line is another thing that can keep the machine from running efficiently. If the drain line is clogged, then the machine cannot properly get rid of moisture and that also causes the machine to work harder than necessary. Don’t have a way to test the refrigerant levels, but it’s easy to tell when the refrigerant pressure is low. It’s warmer in the house and the air coming out of the vents is not as cold as it should be. Once a month I also test all of the safety controls in the house. I check the batteries in the fire alarms and the smoke detector and I also check the carbon monoxide detector. I regularly check the battery on the thermostat as well. This additional attention to detail is important for the health and welfare of the machine.
