There was certainly a stretch of hours where I considered calling the handyman my neighbor always uses. This was a couple of years ago and we were right at the beginning of the pandemic. Our heat pump was acting weird and I was afraid that it might be in need of some sort of HVAC repair. Yet, everything else in our lives had been virtually turned upside down with the start of the pandemic. My wife and I were both sent home from the zone controlled HVAC in our respective offices. That was tough enough as we found working from home in our own air conditioning not the easiest of transitions. But we also both had to take some deep pay cuts just to keep our jobs. So when the heat pump started acting weird as I turned on the air conditioning for the season, all I could think of was money. And the fact that I really hadn’t been as consistent as I needed to be when it came to HVAC maintenance. So that’s why I called my neighbor. He was insistent that his handyman could take care of anything that was home appliance or project related. The guy had been taking care of his HVAC when it broke down for years. So I called the handyman and just about made the appointment until I learned that he wasn’t a certified HVAC technician. And he wouldn’t guarantee the HVAC repair. That was all I needed to hear and the next phone call was to the real HVAC professionals.
