I think the thermostat was collateral damage

Last Saturday, my husband and I went to a wedding and a reception.

We were gone most of the day, but we decided to leave our children at home alone.

They are 10, 14, and 15 years old. My husband and I have left the children at home alone for a couple of hours in the past, but this was the first time we left the children at home alone all day without any supervision. I called my mom on the phone and I asked her to call the kids and check on them. I told my neighbor that the kids would be home alone all day. She promised to listen for any sounds of distress. My husband and I were gone until late in the evening. When we finally came home, all three boys were sitting at the kitchen table quietly. It was extremely warm in the house and my first thought was the air conditioner. My husband felt it was warm inside as well and he decided to walk down the hallway to adjust the thermostat. Before my husband’s feet could hit the floor, one of the boys spoke up and told us that the thermostat was broken. We got three different stories from each one of the kids and none of them were the same. I think they were playing football in the house and the thermostat was collateral damage. The kids tried to tell us that one of them fell walking down the hall, but that honestly doesn’t make a lot of sense. It’s more likely that they hit it with a ball.
