However, once the new roof was in place, we were amazed how quickly the air conditioner lowered the indoor temperature

When we purchased our house, my wife and I were aware that the roof was in bad shape. We knew that the roof would need to be replaced within the next couple of years. Unfortunately, a lot of other home improvement jobs took precedence. We discovered that the duct system was leaking approximately 30% of the heated and cooled air. Since our monthly energy bills were horribly expensive, we invested in duct repair. We also consulted with a local HVAC contractor who recommended replacing both the air conditioner and furnace. He explained that high-efficiency units would pay for themselves in the savings on our utility costs. Even after this huge investment, we weren’t overly impressed with the comfort level of our home or the reduction in our expenses. We continued to look for ways to tighten up the house. We bought and installed new windows, exterior doors and ceiling fans. We caulked, weatherstripped and insulated. All this time, the condition of the roof was steadily getting worse. After every storm with high winds, we’d find stray shingles in the lawn and gardens. Every time it rained really hard, we needed to place buckets under the drips from the ceilings. Realizing that the issues with the roof were going to lead to structural damage and mold growth, I finally called in a roofing contractor. The project was just as awful as we anticipated. The roofing crew trampled the gardens, left debris in the lawn and took over a week to finish the job. We were without air conditioning during the hottest days of summer. There was a steady influx of dust and bugs. However, once the new roof was in place, we were amazed how quickly the air conditioner lowered the indoor temperature. Our house is now far more comfortable and stays cleaner. Plus, our energy bills have been significantly reduced.
