Ductwork cleaning was overdue

Ductwork cleaning was overdue

The forced air HVAC system in our home was installed over eight years ago.

I know that doesn’t seem that long ago but over that time it has started to run more frequently and for longer periods of time. I was worried that we needed to replace the unit but the HVAC technician said that there were ways to make it run more efficiently without replacement. He said that one of the main reasons for systems having to work harder is the buildup of dirt and debris in the ductwork of the home. Since the system is eight years old, it has had that long to have this build up happen. We have kids, dogs, and have done some renovations over the years so I am sure that all of that has added to the problem. He recommended a cleaning of the ductwork and explained that they use powerful vacuums and brushes to completely sweep any dust and debris from the system. We agreed to pay for the service and when they arrived to do the job I could not get over the size of the equipment that they used. What astounded me more was the nearly twenty five pounds of debris they removed. This left me feeling embarrassed that my home was so dirty. They said that this was typical for systems like ours but recommended that we have it cleaned at least every few years. They also said that if we did any projects or renovations we should shut the system off if possible or at the very least cover the vents to avoid major problems.
