It was almost eighty yesterday, but in the middle of the night, I could hear the furnace turn on. I didn’t think it was supposed to get cold last night, but it did. The weather changed through the night. The wind was blowing, and there was a rain shower. The temperatures dropped from seventy to thirty-six around midnight, and it was cool in the house. I was glad I hadn’t pushed my husband into turning on the air conditioning. As cool as it was when I got up, I would have been freezing. He had the thermostat set at sixty, and when I got out of bed, he had a fire in the fireplace to help take the chill off the kitchen. I started his breakfast so he could go to work. He told me he was sure there were going to be a lot of service calls today. People would have had their air conditioning on over the last several days when the heat was on. Now that it was almost thirty degrees cooler than earlier this week, and back to normal, people would forget they had to flip back to heating. He would charge a lot of customers for coming to their house and flipping their thermostat back to heating. It amazes me how quickly we forget those little things, like flipping from heat to AC, but it’s better than finding out there really is a problem with the furnace or the thermostat. I know my husband, the HVAC technician, will charge the lowest amount possible, but it will still be a needless bill they had to pay.
