What You Should Do Before Turning on Your Heater

Most homeowners look forward to the cooler weeks of the year after a scorching hot summer. You will have to use your heating unit at some point, and that’s when things will get warmed up. Here are some tips to follow before turning on your furnace for the current season. First, turn on your pilot light. Since your heating plan hasn’t been running for a while, your pilot light may need to be re-lit. If you don’t know how to do this yourself or want to have your central unit tested at the same time, call a qualified company. Make sure you hire a qualified company because if you want your heating unit to run efficiently and effectively for as long as possible, it must be tested officially by an HVAC company. A qualified company should inspect the unit once a year to ensure this is happening. Replace or clean the air filter well because as your system’s air filter gets dirty, it won’t run well and will be releasing contaminants into your home. This can be prevented by cleaning or replacing the air filter every several weeks, depending on how suddenly it clogs. Make the switch to a better control unit as programmable control units allow you to control the days and times when your HVAC plan operates. Manual control units are a thing of the past and wifi linking and weather upgrades are also available on many of these. Make sure your alarms are legitimately working and there should be at least one or two carbon monoxide alarms per story in your home, along with numerous smoke alarms. Each one can be tested by a small button on the front and batteries can be upgraded if necessary.
