Doctor Advises We Get a Humidifier for Winter Coughs

About a month ago, I started coughing.

  • I got headaches, I ran a fever, and I coughed like crazy.

Here we are, a solid month later, and I am still coughing. I went through a treatment of antibiotics, and I have used all kinds of over the counter meds to help me in my state of misery. I’ve tried to drink lots of hot fluids and get more rest than usual. Yet, I still cough. I called the doctor the other day, and he insists it is unlikely to be anything other than a typical creeping crud cough. He recommends I get a humidifier. It is getting to be a bit chillier, and with the chill comes the dry air. Both the a/c and the heater dry out the air. I live in a very humid climate, so the HVAC systems have built-in dehumidifiers. I thought that was good, but my doctor says a humidifier, with its magical ability to get more water in the air, might help my cough subside. I had actually never even realized that my a/c has a built-in dehumidifier. I have always known, because it is obvious, that the heater seems to dry out the air. In the winter, when the heater is running, I find myself needing eye drops. I use a lot of lotion to keep my skin from flaking off, and chap-stick makes a fortune off of me. So, I am going to take him up on his suggestion. I am headed off to the store to get a portable humidifier. It will battle it out with the dehumidifier in the HVAC system already, which seems like a waste of energy and money. But I am willing to give it a go if it means I might finally get rid of this hacking cough.
