Older homes are bound to have more issues than newer ones that are well maintained, which is understandable.

If you possess the skills to do any necessary repairs on the home without spending tens of thousands of dollars, an old home might work out for you. But for someone like me, they become a bigger headache than what they’re worth. I have severe asthma and sinus and respiratory allergies to a number of environmental triggers like dust, mold, and pollen. There are some old homes that have been properly maintained over the years to prevent these allergens from accumulating inside. Sadly, a good portion of the older homes in my city have spent months or years closed with no climate control inside. If you close a house and don’t control the humidity inside, mold will grow and then it will trigger my allergies significantly. My friend bought an old house for a steal, but I knew it had to be too good to be true at the price he paid. Just like I suspected, the seller had been hiding several key issues. One of those problems was the old and leaky air handler in the attic for the central HVAC system. Little did my friend know, but the air handler was leaking water from its condensate pan into my friend’s living room ceiling. He started to notice the water damage in his ceiling about two months after moving into the property. He is not happy and is considering legal action against the seller for not disclosing the problem during the transaction.
