A geothermal heat pump on the farm
My grandpa raised me, and taught me to be prepared for anything.
This was a while ago, he has been gone for twenty years or so, and he was an old man when I was a young man.
He grew up in the Great Depression, where every day was a fight for survival on the farm. That mindset stuck with him, and he passed it along to me. I still can and jar my extra fruits and veggies from the garden, just in case, and I have a geothermal heat pump to provide energy for me in times of crisis. Because of the name, many people think that this is a heating pump, but this is not the case. A heating pump is part of your central HVAC equipment, and helps the furnace distribute heat through your home. A geothermal heat pump is an energy generating system, much like solar panels or windmills, that converts a limitless natural resource into power for your home. In this case, it is the geothermal energy of the earth itself, which is syphoned off by the heat pump and stored in power cells. I am still connected to the main power grid, but since I use the geothermal heat pump to power my home, the monthly bill is about two dollars. I have enough power cells in reserve that I could go for months with full power, air conditioning, and hot water. Buying a geothermal heat pump is not a small investment of money, but it does pay big dividends in the long run.
