Living outside the U.S. really gave me an HVAC reality check
The first thing I realized when I left this country to go to work in a developing nation far, far away was that I had a lot to learn.
And I had a lot to get accustomed to as well.
Namely, all the things we take for granted were total luxuries where I spent the better part of 3 years. I had the opportunity to leave the cushy zone controlled HVAC comfort of our corporate offices to take that position. Not only would it fast track my career, I would be able to live in a place that was so very different from anything that I had known. I realized really quick that quality heating and air was a rarity. The nation I worked in is a very hot and humid region. Essentially, modern HVAC technology is rare. This took some real getting accustomed to. But I took the advice of others who had been there a long time. The thing I had to do was mentally and physically acclimate to the heat and humidity. And I used to think that visiting down south was hot and humid! I lived in a place that didn’t have any sort of air conditioning to speak of. However, we did have an evaporative cooler which did make a difference. My best friends became the shade, the breeze and a nice fan. Still, it was such a fascinating chapter in both my career and life. Now that I’m back, I don’t think I’ll ever take my heat pump for granted again. Residential HVAC seems like a birthright in this country. And we simply take it for granted. It’s just not like that in the rest of the world.
