When he realized I was working with some old pals of his, he chose to talk to them

When our brother went into the service, I didn’t realize it was going to be 2 years before I would see him again. He went right from boot camp to overseas, where he spent the next 2 years. In that time, I had graduated from school & gone to a technical school for Heating, Ventilation, & A/C certification classes. I already had our Heating, Ventilation, & A/C certification & had a year of on-the-task training by the time our brother got home. I loved the task I was doing & the people I was working with. I thought I had the perfect task. I knew I was able to do the task that everyone else was doing, but then our brother came home. He was the same big brother he always was. He never thought I would amount to much & that I should just grow up & become a housewife with a husband who could take care of me. You can’t imagine how shocked he was when he realized I had gone to Heating, Ventilation, & A/C school & was now working in the local Heating, Ventilation, & A/C corporation. He thought I should be embarrassed to be working with these men. I was talking currency out of their pockets & food off their tables. He thought they were only putting up with our working there because I was a woman & part of an affirmative action group of ladies. There wasn’t anything I could do to convince him that I was there because I was fantastic at our task. When he realized I was working with some old pals of his, he chose to talk to them. My coworker told him that he was proud to labor with me.
