Occasionally a family friend comes to do an a/c tune up for us and offer us some energy saving tips that push us for a while

Things haven’t been working my way lately, financially. So I am behind on a lot of bills one of which is energy bills. My last service was due three months ago but I figured it could wait a little longer since it’s still functioning. However, the last two weeks have been unbearable and my toddler’s fear of the unusual noise my ac makes doesn’t make this experience any better. We both lost our jobs and we haven’t received our approval to be considered for government support. In the meantime, we live off my husband’s irregular handyman jobs. Although my husband has been witnessing previous a/c services, he is afraid of touching it at this point for fear of causing more problems. So we only get to use it when my baby is asleep or out playing. Thankfully, it’s not a cold season but when it gets too hot like now, we do a little temperature control with minimal speed settings. We have been in desperate need of new air conditioning for a while now, especially a ductless HVAC but can’t afford it. The ductwork is a nightmare for us. Because of lack of money, our local contractor stopped coming so we tried talking to a new contractor who works at a nearby cooling and heating company to sell us a second-hand unit on credit but it didn’t work out. Occasionally a family friend comes to do an a/c tune up for us and offer us some energy saving tips that push us for a while. He is a retired a/c professional who knows a lot more about air conditioning, so he is familiar with most HVAC brands and the troubles we face with our HVAC equipment.
