I have to buy special insurance for my business to cover myself from weather damage. I knew this ahead of time when I decided to buy property along the coast in the southeast. This region is exposed to hurricanes every single year. Granted, we get lucky sometimes when we are missed, but it’s still a factor from August until early November each year. Homeowners have to pay extra for insurance on their homes. If you want coverage in case there is a flood, you have to buy separate flood insurance. That means that you need basic home insurance, a separate policy for hurricanes in the event of wind damage, and a third policy in the event of flooding storm surge from a hurricane. This is no different for businesses both small and large. The problem is that you have to pay significantly more for a similar group of insurance policies. My chiller that I use for cooling my factory’s machines and air is located outside. It’s an air cooled chiller and was significantly cheaper than a water cooled chiller when I bought it. This was after the last one was destroyed in a hurricane one year. Instead of getting an indoor water cooled chiller, I went ahead and got the same air cooled chiller that is installed outside. They’re easier to access for the chiller and boiler repair techs and also easier to replace if you need a replacement or upgrade. If my newest chiller gets damaged again I might consider paying more for an indoor chiller, but we’ll have to wait and see. I could always opt to rent chillers for the time being as well.
