Hard working out in the north

Working out in the north is not very easy.

The main reason is the weather.

A northern summer is really just a few weeks of heavy humidity. Other than that, it is freezing cold. I really like going for runs but my season is super short. The snow comes quickly and lingers a long time. Going for a run in freezing cold wind is never fun either. Wearing tons of layers and tight muscles makes it feel super difficult. I try whenever possible to do my exercising outside, but more often than not I am confined indoors. In the winter I work out right in front of my gas fireplace to keep warm. The cold makes my muscles tight and stretching actually hurts. I have trouble making myself do push ups, sit ups and squats. Everything is sore and angry with me. When the weather gets real bad I do spring for a gym membership. I get access to equipment, personal training if I want and quality heating during a workout. The only snag is the drive. Living in a small town means I have to drive at least 30 minutes in order to get to my fitness center. Sometimes I don’t feel like taking two hours out of my day. I also don’t like driving in the snow and cold as well. There are months that I pay for a gym membership and I don’t even use it once. I find it amazing that not every northerner is as big as a whale. It is super difficult to keep in shape.
