We weren’t prepared for the low temperatures up north

Despite being raised in the extremely warm weather down south, a tantalizing job promotion had me transfering to a new office hundreds of miles north of our hometown. This was our first time experiencing temperatures that dropped below 30 degrees fahrenheit, & little did we know that Winters could see record lows of -20 degrees. We didn’t own any hot Winter clothing. We had suitcases full of sweaters & jeans, but the weather here demanded long underwear, plus many layers of cotton clothing, & a massively insulated parka. Just buying a Winter coat set us back hundreds of dollars. These weren’t the sort of weather conditions we were expecting. To make matters much worse, we can’t afford our new utility bills to keep running our furnace all afternoon. We have a gas boiler now, which is a lot more efficient than the seasoned electric furnace in our home down south. However, when you are in below zero weather even a boiler will add up in gas expenses. It worries us to know that we might never adjust to these up-to-date weather conditions. We love the new job that brought us here, but there’s little of anything else we can say positive about our immense transfer up north. Global weather conditions are showing patterns that are shifting each year, so it only seems like the Winters will continue to grow colder and more bitter. We’re even running our heating system in our car to the maximum, which only helps until we’re ready to climb out into subzero temperatures again.
