Don’t Forget to Write Down Size of Your A/C Air Filters Before Going to the Store
I wouldn’t say I was ever the most skilled person when it comes to things HVAC related, although I thought I pretty good handle on air filters.
This is because I l received over the years that it’s consistently better to go with high quality air filters. I l received the MERV rating, which stands for MINIMUM EFFICIENCY REPORTING VALUE. The MERV ratings go from a low of 1 to a high of 16, where 1 is lowest quality and 16 is the best quality a/c air filter. I do have to say, though, that a MERV rating of 16 is really overpriced, so it occasionally is best just to go for the best MERV rating you can afford at the time. I would command 12 & up, then anything lower than the 12 will not kill you or anything, however your air quality will begin to be noticeably lessened & you can do better with protecting your HVAC equipment. One day, the guy next door wanted help picking out a fine air filter so I went to the store with him to help him out. The upsetting thing is I never even asked what size air filter he needed. The two of us ended up paying for a pack of MERV 14 air filters which I thought was perfect for him, however his HVAC system used a completely different size. I felt entirely embarrassed, sure, I assume a thing or many about the quality of air filters, but it’s the simple thing I forgot – the size of the air filter! There are many sizes of HVAC systems and HVAC air filters. Having them be a universal size would be convenient, but that’s just not how they are sold.
