My mother told me I should be an actress. (feigned a faint without AC)
I harrumphed and stomped my way to the bedroom.
I didn’t think my mother was funny last week when she told me I should be an actress when I grow up. She had never seen a more realistic faint than the one I feigned today. Unfortunately, she saw me peep out through my lashes, and knew I was just being dramatic. It was eighty degrees in my bedroom, and I wanted my air conditioning turned on. She refused to fall for my bit of melodrama and told me to get over it. She wasn’t switching from heat to air conditioning because I was uncomfortable. She told me to close the window shades during the day, and turn on the fan. With the windows open at night, it would cool the room down. In the morning, I needed to close the windows and pull the shades down. That’s how mom kept the house cool during the day. I was also to leave the ceiling fan running. I was sure she had the air conditioning turned on in her bedroom and downstairs, but she said she didn’t. She told me I could feel the air ducts. She knew what to do from years of practice, and she would not turn on the air conditioning because I thought I needed it. I harrumphed and stomped my way to the bedroom. I even slammed the door for good measure. I didn’t tell her I tried it, but that night I opened the window and turned on the fan. When I got up, I closed the window and pulled the shade down. My room really was cooler when I got home from school..
