A cold, peaceful winter in a cabin
A cold, peaceful winter in a cabin
This is going to be the most unique Christmas of my life.
Normally, we always had some sort of Christmas celebration inside the central air conditioning of my house or another family member.
It was so great to have such a large extended family and my kids really enjoyed their cousins. But that’s not going to be the case this year. My wife died a couple of years ago and last Christmas was just too depressing for me to repeat. So I’ve retreated to the family cabin this year with just me, the dog, a wood stove and a ductless heat pump. This cabin was recently renovated a bit to bring it in to this century. I’m sure that my dad is rolling over in his grave now that we have residential HVAC in the cabin. My dad always kept the cabin very, very rustic and it was his place to shed the city and balance his mind. I think I got a bit of that from Dad. The cabin has always meant so much to me as well. I too was a bit resistant when the rest of the family really wanted to do some upgrades that included residential HVAC. But now that I’m up here and going to spend the holidays by myself, I’m pretty thankful for that ductless heat pump. Of course, having been up here all my life I know my way around a wood stove. But it still takes a few days to remember how to manage it in order to keep it lit and heating all the time. So having the ductless heat pump is pretty nice so I could have heating as soon as I walked in the door. This Christmas is going to be kind of different but I’m also sort of looking forward to the solitude.
