There was an incredibly tragic accident in our community last year.

An elderly couple named Sue and Bob lived on the corner of our street for nearly 50 years and were friends with everyone around.

Both of us all saw ambulances at their beach house early in the afternoon 1 Tuesday and found out that their boy found them unconscious in their bed. Apparently a gas water heating system was leaking carbon monoxide gas and it killed them in their sleep. Unluckyly, they were not using carbon monoxide detectors at the time. If they had, they would have survived the gas leak assuming the alarms were loud enough to wake them out of their sleep. I put at least some of the blame on their heating and cooling professionals. I can’t imagine installing a gas oil furnace for an elderly couple and not including 1 or two carbon monoxide detectors for free for their health and safety. And even if I was the cheapest guy on Earth, at least I would tell them to go out and buy them for themselves from a nearby hardware store. They’re almost the same price as a smoke detector, and you can even buy devices that do both so you don’t need separate detectors for fire and gas leaks. But they’re not just necessary for gas oil heating systems and gas powered furnaces prefer steam boilers, they’re essential for homes that have any gas appliances, even cook stoves and ranges. When I bought my first gas powered water heater, I bought numerous carbon monoxide detectors for my home as you can’t be too careful.
