Don’t need to keep the space heater under my desk anymore
It was a really tough transition for me when I took the job up here.
For one, there had never been a female managing this operation prior to me taking the helm. It’s a pretty big company with offices nationwide but it’s also a fairly male dominated industry. So being a southern woman coming from all that sun and air conditioning to a place with all dudes and all that cold wasn’t easy. I have to say that the first winter almost sent me packing. Thankfully, the little place that I bought had recently undergone a heating and cooling equipment upgrade. If it hadn’t been for that wonderful gas furnace of mine, I don’t think I’d have had anything positive about that first winter. The reception I got that fall when I arrived was as chilly as the weather outside. There was no doubt that I was not the choice for the local crew in the office. What’s worse, the guy I beat out was still working there and actively trying to undermine me. Then, it was just the office itself. The place was not all that nice and certainly not conducive to me getting my stuff done. I had to bring in a space heater in order to just get warm enough at my desk just to work. But I persevered that first winter and did nothing but go from the gas furnace at home to work and back again. Eventually, before the spring, things started to turn around and the office was beginning to thrive with people making bonuses. Plus, corporate rewarded that effort with zone controlled HVAC for the office. That meant I could take my space heater home with me.
