I wasn’t expecting to be diagnosed with asthma at 35.

My assumption was that most people are diagnosed with asthma as children, since typically the symptoms manifest at an early age.

For instance, my sister was diagnosed at four-years-old and has had a rescue inhaler on hand ever since. During the instances where she had bronchitis or the flu, she had to use her inhaler on a daily basis. When I caught the same illnesses, my reactions were similar to others in my family. We simply didn’t have the kind of respiratory problems that besiege my sister. As anyone might imagine, I was taken off guard when my doctor told me that my recent uptick in allergies was due to late onset asthma. I was dumbfounded by this suggestion. But once I started taking the medicine that he prescribed me, I suddenly felt less restricted in my airwaves. I could clear my throat and breathe without any wheezing. Instead of having cold symptoms, I was experiencing the effects of my asthma. I hate using this inhaler everyday now, but at least I’m getting some form of relief finally. To take this one step further, I consulted with my heating and cooling company and they suggested buying an air purifier for my room. They’re small and plug directly into the wall. The one my HVAC dealer was selling features UV lights and a HEPA filter. Between that and a carbon filter for odors, this air purifier is perfect for pulling out any harmful particles in the air. My inhaler certainly helps, but my new air purifier is what sets me straight in the long run. I keep it on at all times and have noticed a huge decrease in my allergy symptoms.
