It’s actually fun helping my son earn merit badges

When we first got a house with a fireplace, I didn’t trust any of the kids to get anywhere near the fireplace because I didn’t want the house to burn down.

Well, my son became a boy scout and he learned all kinds of amazing things.

When he was knocking out different merit badges, he asked me if I would teach him out to build a fire as that was something he had to learn. I figured that he was responsible enough, so I taught him how to build the fire in the fireplace. He actually took to it right away. I even let him build the fire in the fireplace regularly after that and I didn’t have to worry because I knew he wasn’t going to burn the place down. I let him know one of the most important rules which was to never leave a fire unattended. Eventually I showed him how to build a fire in the fireplace we have in the back. I showed him there are different types of styles when building a fire. I showed him the teepee style and he really liked that. He also thought the log cabin style fire was pretty cool. Eventually he was able to earn his merit badge for wilderness survival. Next he had to learn how to work on various appliances like household appliances or even something like a window A/C unit. I realized that I had an old window A/C unit in the garage that I was meaning to fix. We worked together to repair the window A/C unit and I think we both learned a few things. Eventually, he was able to earn that merit badge. I actually have a good time doing these kinds of activities with my kid. We’re planning on going camping soon.
