I should have followed up with my regular HVAC maintenance

It is finally warm enough that I need to use the air conditioner.

We had a long, cold winter followed by a beautiful spring.

Then it went from comfortable to hot over night. So I turned on my air conditioner. The first thing I noticed was the smell of something burning. I didn’t think much of it. After all, our heater always has that smell when we use it for the first time in late fall. The smell always burns off after awhile. So I left the house to run some errands. When I came back the fire department was in front of my house! They had broken my door to get in and smoke was billowing from my house! I couldn’t believe it. One of my neighbors had heard my smoke detectors and saw the smoke coming out from under the door and through the gaps in the windows and called 911. The fire department said that the fire was contained in my utility closet. There was almost no damage done to anything except for my HVAC system. For that, I am grateful. Still, my whole house smells like smoke now. I have to wash everything. I also need to call up an HVAC company to replace my HVAC system. That is not going to be cheap. The fire department said this likely could have been avoided if I had had my HVAC system serviced twice a year like you are supposed to. I wish I had followed up with my regular maintenance. It would have saved me a lot of money and a lot of embarrassment.
