I just installed carbon monoxide detectors at my parent’s condo

As my parents grow older, I get increasingly worried about them and their health.

I visit them twice each week, but it’s not enough to assuage my concerns.

I try to do any maintenance or repair work to keep my father off ladders and away from power tools. The last thing I want is for one of them to end up in the hospital after having an accident doing something I could have done for them myself. You’d think that putting up their Christmas tree would be safe, but I still insist on doing this for them as well. I get the tree, lights, and decorations out of their basement and I bring them into the living room upstairs. Recently I was inspecting their smoke detectors to make sure they all had good batteries inside. This is when I realized that my parents did not have carbon monoxide detectors. For someone with electric heat, this wouldn’t matter; unfortunately, my parents have a gas furnace. If the heat exchanger in the gas furnace cracked and started leaking toxic carbon monoxide gas, they would have no way of knowing without the aid of carbon monoxide gas detectors. I spent a few hours yesterday installing carbon monoxide detectors in various places in their condo. This way if they run into issues with their heating system in the future, they’ll find out right away if it is leaking carbon monoxide gas. Knowing my parents have these new sensors in their home gives me a lot of peace of mind. Still, it disturbs me when I realize that they’ve been going without them for the last 20 years straight.
