This cabin is a labor of love

It was not nearly big enough for cooling down the whole house, but I had one room that was the perfect temperature and at first that was good enough

In hindsight, I could have built a whole new cabin in less time, and for less money, then what this old cabin cost me. But this one has sentimental value, right? This is the same cabin where my grandpa took me to learn to fish, and to swim. When I was a teenager I snuck the keys for this place, and brought my girlfriend here for our “first time.” This cabin is steeped in the great memories of my life, so fixing it up, making it great, was a labor of love. The first thing I needed was a working air conditioner, something the place had never before seen. When it was first built things like HVAC systems were never used in lakeside cabins, you had to use air vents and wind for natural ventilation to cool you down. My generation is far too soft to rely on air vents, or anything as primitive as nature, so that was the first thing I did. I set up a small air conditioner in the master bedroom, one of the old box style models that you mount in a window. It was not nearly big enough for cooling down the whole house, but I had one room that was the perfect temperature and at first that was good enough. After I got the place insulated, and the windows and doors sealed, then I brought in a bigger AC unit so I could cool down the whole cabin. There is a wood burning stove, so heating the cabin in the winter is a snap.
