My landlord is “maintenance”

My landlord is “maintenance”

When you’re signing on with a new rental company, you never really know what you’re getting. Even if you try to do your research and look at reviews online, there’s no way to know what your experience is going to be like. Similarly, I fear that when I moved into my recent home I signed up for a particularly terrible maintenance and repair program. You see, I rent from a private landlord who manages the property in his spare time. Apparently, this covers all aspects of showing, renting, and repairing. I figured this out the hard way a few weeks ago when my central heating and cooling system was struggling to keep up with the indoor temperature control demands. The outdoor air temperature has been slowly climbing as the summer season rolled into the area. As my days became warmer and more humid, I noticed that my central cooling system was struggling to keep up. I figured that the AC unit needed a professional inspection, if not some kind of diagnostic repair. I couldn’t keep affording the astronomically high energy bills created by the inefficient cooling unit. When I contacted my landlord and inquired about arranging a professional HVAC inspection before the summer season really took hold, he replied that it would be no problem at all. The next day, I looked outside and found my landlord banging away at the air conditioning system. When I asked what he was up to, he nonchalantly told me that he was here for the HVAC inspection. Despite having no HVAC certifications or air quality control credentials, it seems that my landlord is going to be at my heating and cooling contractor for the remainder of the lease. Buckle up for high energy bills.
