Is mom cooler than she used to be?

It’s kind of interesting as you get older and your relationship changes with your parents.

Suddenly, you stopp seeing them as the know-it-all authoritarian forces that they were when you were growing up.

They aren’t all-knowing, all-seeing Gods anymore. They are silly adults trying to figure their way out in the world, just like you. I’ve also noticed that my mom and I have come to a new level of understanding since I have gotten older. I’ll admit, I think she’s even gotten a lot cooler. When I was growing up, my mom was extremely strict and a bit unpredictable. She was always upset about something, and a menial detail such as the heating and cooling settings could easily set her off for a day. She was obsessed with saving energy and cutting our utility bills around the house because she had such a stringent budget. That meant, we weren’t allowed to touch the thermostat for any reason. The central heating and cooling equipment was off-limits to the kids. We were going to live with whatever thermostat program she had created to save our energy and money. I remember many brutally cold Winters and extremely hot summers. She never wanted to utilize the forced air furnace or air conditioning system because they were so costly. If we were overheated in the Summer, she told us to take a cold shower. Now, as an adult I’ve been visiting my mom for a few weeks and everything seems different. The other day when I mentioned the outdoor heat and humidity, she actually asked if I wanted to turn the air conditioning unit down lower. I swear to God, I did a spit-take when she made her HVAC offer. I guess as I’m getting older, my mom really is getting cooler. Literally.
