My father has been slowly showing me the ropes with handyman work and home maintenance.

  • I’m expecting a son in a few months and while my wife deals with the pregnancy, I have been signing mortgage paperwork and scheduling contractors.

This has all been on top of my busier than usual work schedule. With all of the stress, having my dad’s help through this chaos has been a Godsend. This week, he was helping me make a decision on a potential plumbing repair after the plumber found more issues than either of us were expecting. With my age and lack of experience, it’s easy to be taken advantage of by contractors and handymen. In this situation, my father confirmed the problem himself after the plumber finished the inspection. Since getting all of the plumbing and electrical repairs finished, we have been looking at options to increase the efficiency of the central heating and cooling system. Although the air conditioner has a high SEER rating and is only a few years old, it couldn’t get the house as cool as it should. The HVAC tech said that there were no leaks in the ductwork, but that they were poorly insulated. On top of that, the ducts are installed in an attic with absolutely no insulation of any kind. This is when I learned about the importance of insulating a home properly and how much it affects the performance of the central heating and cooling system. In my case, I was fortunate enough to be presented with a problem that we could easily solve. Since the rest of the house has good insulation with solid windows and doors, only the attic needed modifications. We used a spray gun that blasts insulation out in a wet foam that quickly expands and dries into a solid and effective layer of insulation. By adding insulation to my attic, I simultaneously increased the R value of my house in the process.
